Besides brushing and flossing on a daily basis, twice-yearly dental cleanings are required to help maintain proper oral hygiene. These professional cleanings help remove mineralized plaque from those "hard to reach areas" in the mouth, that may develop even with daily care. Avoid the costs and discomfort associated with more substantial dental detriments by visiting us for a check-up and cleaning every 6 months.
How it's done:
Your dental cleaning should last between 30 minutes and an hour. Typically, one of our trained hygienists will perform the cleaning, and Dr. Coffman or Dr. Le will come in for an exam afterward. Most patients find that cleanings do not cause any pain or discomfort.
There are two steps taken in a successful dental cleaning. The first step, scaling, is a removal of the plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth. This will be performed with hand or electric tools, depending on the preference of the hygienist. The pockets of the gums will also be targeted, as those are areas where buildup can occur as well.
The second step is a polishing of the teeth. This helps remove any last plaque or tartar and also buffs the teeth for a nice clean look and feeling.
